What is FSSC 22000?

Officially known as the Food Safety System Certification 22000, it is an internationally-recognized scheme owned by the non-profit Foundation FSSC that is used to certify and audit food safety in participating organizations of the food industry.

FSSC 22000 standards are composed of three main elements:

The certification is based on well-known international standards set out by the International Organization for Standardization, specifically the ISO 22000 family of standards. This ranges the whole breadth of the food and drinks industry and supply chain, from farming to manufacturing and processing, packaging to transport and retail. Realizing these ISO standards is a requirement to be approved for FSSC 22000. For our sector, FSSC specifies prerequisite programs (PRPs) that focus on facility hygiene, quality of raw materials used to manufacture food packaging, among many other important considerations.

Foundation FSSC works closely with other food safety management organizations such as the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and is a part of the United Nations Global Compact. This cooperation increases transparency and the ability to promptly resolve new issues, strengthening the integrity of the scheme and aiding certified organizations in achieving their UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The certification introduces additional requirements for specific sectors of the food industry to ensure consistency and integrity through guidance, consulting, unannounced audits, and revisions. This is done to address issues such as the absence of industry-specific PRPs within the food supply chain and the failure to reflect food safety issues from global regulatory organizations like the US FDA and the UK FSA.
